So What Is Muscle Testing in Kinesiology?

I've noticed when talking to others, that there is a huge misconception or lack of understanding when it comes to what we do and how we do it, so I thought I'd write up an insight into one of the techniques.
Muscle testing is a technique I use in Kinesiology and it involves applying gentle resistance to specific muscles or muscle groups to evaluate:
Muscle strength
Neuromuscular control
Balance between opposing muscles
Energy or stress responses
It helps determine whether a muscle is:
Strong and engaged
Weak or inhibited
Overactive or compensating for another
So how is this done / how do I do it?
The client holds a position (e.g., shoulder flexed to 90°)
I apply light pressure against the muscle action
The client resists the pressure
The quality of the response is observed (strong, weak, shaky, or painful)
Muscle testing is used not only to assess strength but to evaluate how muscles respond to:
Nutritional substances (e.g., supplements)
Emotional stress
Energy pathways (related to acupressure or meridian systems)
As practitioners, we believe the body will "weaken" in the presence of dysfunction or imbalance.
So How Does Muscle Testing Fits Into a Wellness Plan?
Muscle testing helps to:
Identify which muscles are weak, tight, or compensating
Create a custom movement or rehab plan
Track progress over time (e.g., if a weak core muscle improves after 6 weeks)
Pinpoint postural or movement faults contributing to pain or dysfunction
When noticing weakness, I suggest and apply some corrections, do some release work, suggest targeted strength exercises and supplements.
My aim is to reset the body, the muscles and make you feel more balanced and at ease.
